Shu Uemura is a skincare and cosmetics brand originating from Japan and responsible for one of the first beauty cleansing oils to hit the market. The founder (who bears the same name) was a make-up artist and believed that great make up started from great skin. I would definitely agree with this and this is why I tend to get most excited about reviewing skincare products, especially face cleansers which are such a necessity when living in London!
My favourite type of cleansers are micellar waters, such as La Roche-Posay‘s and Caudalie‘s, as they are effective at cleansing yet are gentle and kind on skin, plus they are a favourite of make-up artist professionals. When I first heard about the Shu Uemura iconic cleansing oils, I was really intrigued to see how they would fare, especially as the products look so darn stylish!
I have combination skin (oily t-zone) so was given the Shu Uemura Pore Clarifying Gentle Cleansing Oil to try, which comes in a translucent pink bottle and is designed for normal/combination/oily skin types. It contains LHA which is a great ingredient as it is derived from salicylic acid that helps to really exfoliate your skin and reduce sebum/oil so that the other ingredients can penetrate through and work their magic! It also contains Sakura Leaf Extract which reduces inflammation and redness.
I began by taking off my initial make-up with a micellar water before using the oil. The best way to apply is to get 2-3 pumps of the clear oil onto dry fingers then rub in circular motions around your face – this left my skin looking and feeling a little greasy but this is to be expected at this stage. You then wet your fingers and continue the motion so that the oil starts to turn into a lather, before splashing it all off and gently dabbing your skin dry.
I was very happy with this product; it was so gentle on my skin (which would make it ideal for those who suffer with sensitive skin) and not only applied really easily but also washed off pretty much straight away too. My skin was left feeling super smooth and clean afterwards and as you only need 2-3 pumps of the product each time, this should hopefully mean that each bottle should last quite a while. I enjoyed using this product and would recommend this if you had the money, however I do still feel like you may need one other cleanser in the same routine to really get all that dirt and grime off your skin.
The oils are available to buy from Selfridges and come in two sizes – £29.50 for 150ml and £59 for 450ml.
Have you tried any Shu Uemura products? Would you recommend any?
