September has now arrived, which means a fresh batch of new season high street drops as well as fashion weeks just around the corner! I thought it would be the perfect time to do a roundup of the top AW12 trends and what the shops have in store…
Metallics are back this AW12 and this time with a prominent sci-fi theme! Jean Paul Gautier’s AW12 catwalk played heavily with angular lines and 3D layers of foiled metallics, Mattijs’ AW12 catwalk featured lame golds, silvers and space age-amoeba shapes (all set to the Star Wars theme tune!) and Peter Pilotto mixed structured tailoring with bold flashes of neon and metallics, all paying homage to the sci-fi genre.
Get the look with Missguided’s textured bronze skirt, New Look’s gold studded black dress or Boohoo’s gold foil leggings.
Bronzed Gold Metallics
For those not brave enough to embrace the spage-age metallics, then the catwalks were full of pared down bronze and gold metallic tones for a more sophisticated and luxe feel. Temperley London’s AW12 show featured ladylike bronze dresses and tops, Nicole Farhi’s AW12 catwalk pared metallic bronze and golds with muted luxe knits and Maria Grachvogel’s AW12 show was adorned with loose shimmering bronze shirts and dresses.
For the subtle metallic glam look, try Pop Couture’s bronze dress, River Island’s oversized gold tee or River Island’s metallic tee with black sleeves.
Black returns this AW12 with a definitive gothic twist. Gucci’s AW12 runway embraced billowing black capes, sheer black shirts, black velvet bows and black lace boots to create a truly vampirish collection, John Rocha played with black lace inserts and trims for a sexy evening feel and Bora Aksu’s AW12 collection featured high collars and black baroque prints seemingly inspired by the Victorian gothic.
Get the look with Miss Selfridge’s black lace blazer, River Island’s black lace trim shorts or ASOS’ black lace peplum top.
It looks set to be a white Christmas this year if the catwalks are anything to go by. White chiffon, sheer and opaque materials with high, embellished collars and white lace trims were the order of the day on the AW12 catwalks of Bora Aksu, Temperley London and PPQ.
Copy the white Victoriana catwalk look with Miss Selfridge’s cream/nude dress with embellished collar, River Island’s longline lace blazer or Miss Selfridge’s lace peplum top.
SS12’s pastel and holographic florals make way for darker, impressionistic autumnal florals this AW12. Alexander McQueen’s vibrant AW12 catwalk heralded the way with bold applique floral dresses, whilst the AW12 shows from Clements Ribeiro and Temperley London also featured dark, folky floral designs.
Get the look with Missguided’s flattering drop-hem floral skirt, River Island’s autumnal floral top and Topshop’s corset bralet.
Wet Look Leather
The wet look will be big this AW12 and not just thanks to Britain’s weather! The AW12 catwalks of John Rocha, Lanvin and Gareth Pugh all incorporated wet look leather in their collections, with lack lame, black quilted leather jackets and wet-look leather dresses all making an appearance.
Copy the catwalk style with Lavish Alice’s stylish peplum top with wet-look shoulders, Missguided’s black blazer with wet-look sleeves and Glamorous’ wet-look disco pants.
Red, burgundy, berry and wine were the colours of choice on the AW12 catwalks, with Christopher Kane, Zoe Jordan and Topshop Unique all embracing the deep shade in their AW12 collections. This is the autumnal shade that will return year after year, making it a solid investment.
Be seen in AW12’s key colour with Boohoo’s studded detail trousers, River Island’s gold zip boots and Matalan’s affordable patent burgundy ballet shoe.
Baroque prints are set to be big this AW12. Dolce & Gabbana’s AW12 collection was the key force behind this trend as their catwalk was adorned everywhere with strong gold and black Baroque prints on dresses, coats, tops and trousers. Bora Aksu’s AW12 catwalk also incorporated Baroque prints, though these were more subtle overlays.
Be a Baroque beauty with Topshop’s jewelled midi dress, New Look’s stylish clutch and Boohoo’s D&G inspired leggings.
There are countless other trends set for this AW12, including purple shades, mustard tones, houndstooth, checks and 7os influences but I have tried to encapsulate the key ones which are out on the high street now. Happy shopping!
